A planning milestone, not a new announcement
Microsoft’s published Entra ID transition schedule says administrators will be able to select and configure a supported telecom provider through the Microsoft Security Store beginning October 30. The company plans to end its own SMS and voice delivery on February 1, 2027. Its July announcement also described a September rollout encouraging passkey registration. These dates apply to the public cloud; Microsoft says other environments will have separate guidance.
Exceptions carry an operating decision
Microsoft recommends phishing-resistant authentication and says customers retaining SMS or voice through a partner will be responsible for associated telecom charges. The coming milestone therefore has procurement and support implications as well as technical ones. A business should verify its applicable tenant and current vendor guidance before treating a date as a universal cutoff.
Start with people who cannot follow the default path
Our recommendation is to identify actual exceptions rather than buy a replacement for every user by assumption. Healthcare teams may need to examine shared workstations and shift changes. Schools should account for staff onboarding and device availability. A small business should consider who will help an employee regain access when a device is lost. Those are workflow questions to test, not reasons to presume that one authentication method will fit every situation.
Budget for enrollment and recovery, too
Ask IT and the business owner to produce a user-group inventory, a tested enrollment process and an approved recovery procedure. Where a telecom exception is necessary, record its rationale, owner and review date, then verify the available commercial terms through the intended provider. Do not invent a per-user cost before those terms are known. MSP proposals should make clear whether migration assistance, help-desk support and any third-party charges are included. A modest pilot can reveal training and device issues while there is still time to adjust. The useful October outcome is a documented transition decision with a support plan, rather than an unexplained new line on a software bill.
