The defender has more to protect than an alert queue

The UK National Cyber Security Centre has cautioned against assuming that more autonomous security action automatically produces a better defense. In a September 21 analysis, Dave Chismon argues that defenders must account for the business effects of their actions in ways attackers do not. Containment can stop malicious activity while also interrupting legitimate work, making the consequences of a mistaken action central to deployment decisions.

Assess the action before expanding autonomy

The NCSC discussion examines the strength and reach of an action, the importance of affected systems, confidence in rollout and the ability to recover. Its analysis supports beginning with lower-risk uses and maintaining human responsibility. The article is a framework for evaluating defensive automation, not a finding that every AI security product is unsafe or that human review eliminates mistakes.

A sector-specific decision needs local knowledge

For healthcare, an automated isolation decision should be evaluated with the people responsible for the affected clinical workflow. An energy or utility operator should similarly consider service dependencies before granting an agent authority to change production access. These are planning examples. The same technical command may have very different business consequences depending on where it runs, what relies on the system and whether a safe alternative is available.

Design the pilot around an incorrect decision

Our recommendation is to ask a pilot team to demonstrate a plausible false positive: who sees the action, who can reverse it and what happens while they respond? Record both the security benefit sought and the disruption the organization is prepared to accept. An agent that only recommends an action and one that executes it should have different release criteria. Expanding authority should follow evidence from the organization’s own environment, including failed and ambiguous cases, rather than a demonstration that only shows successful detections.
