A new product for a growing oversight problem
Barracuda announced AI Data Security on September 22, aiming the product at organizations with limited security staff and the managed service providers supporting them. The company says the service will combine visibility into generative AI use with inspection of prompts and uploads, policy controls and audit records. Availability is planned for October 2026. The announcement brings another security buying decision to businesses that may still be deciding which AI applications employees should use.
Separate the launch from the proof
Barracuda says the product will support more than 1,300 generative AI tools and be included in SecureEdge Premium Access at no additional cost. Those are vendor statements, not results from an independent evaluation by this publication. Buyers should distinguish an announced capability from a demonstrated result in their own environment. Our view is that a useful pilot starts with a short list of real work: drafting a client email, summarizing a document and analyzing a spreadsheet. Use synthetic records to establish what is blocked, what is allowed and what an administrator can explain afterward.
Different businesses need different boundaries
For a healthcare practice, the evaluation should center on how staff handle patient information and who approves exceptions. A professional-services firm should ask the same question about client files, confidential advice and contractual restrictions. A small business without a security team needs an answer to an even more basic operational question: who will review a warning and help an employee finish the task safely? These are proposed evaluation criteria, not evidence that the product meets every sector requirement.
Make oversight part of the purchase
A defensible buying process should identify the person responsible for policy changes, access to inspection records and employee support. Ask the provider to document what information the service retains, which workflows it cannot inspect and how exceptions are revoked. Then measure the staff time required to operate the pilot. A control that produces records nobody reviews can still leave management unable to answer a customer’s question. The meaningful outcome is a repeatable way to protect sensitive work while allowing approved uses of AI.
