A test scheduled for later this month
AWS said on September 28 that it plans to test the operational independence of its European Sovereign Cloud on October 24. For several hours, the environment will disconnect from the AWS Global Network backbone and use dedicated internet connectivity. AWS also plans to disable a separate system that handles limited operational-data transfers. The exercise is still ahead; no result should be read into the announcement. The company says it will share findings with customers and regulators afterward.
What AWS says customers can expect
AWS says service availability and Direct Connect will be unaffected, while brief connectivity disruptions may occur as network routes change at the start and end. The exercise will be run by its EU-based operational team using resources within the sovereign environment. The company positions the test as additional evidence for assurance and compliance packages. Its announcement does not certify a customer’s application, demonstrate that an outside software supplier will stay reachable, or promise that every customer dependency has been tested.
The customer’s resilience question
Our assessment: financial-services firms and public-sector suppliers evaluating sovereign hosting should request a dependency review alongside the provider’s eventual test report. An application can sit in one region while relying on an identity provider, payment service, monitoring tool or support process elsewhere. Draw the complete transaction, including login, data retrieval and exception handling. Then identify which components the cloud provider operates and which belong to the customer or another vendor. This is an architecture exercise, not an assumption that those external services will fail. It makes the scope of an independence claim concrete enough for a business owner to evaluate.
Turn the announcement into a measurable review
For teams already using the environment, agree beforehand which customer-facing checks will run around the exercise and who will investigate anomalies. Measure the ability to complete important transactions, not simply whether a dashboard stays green. For an MSP comparing hosting options, request the announced findings when available and distinguish observed results from design commitments. Record unresolved dependencies and the person responsible for each one. A procurement decision should connect the evidence to the actual workload and its recovery priorities. The useful outcome is a clearer account of what can continue independently, what requires outside cooperation and which claims still need testing.
